Proposed Analysis: | I work as a statistician in an Alzheimer's disease research group, and have become interested in the problem of how to train junior Alzheimer's researchers in reproducible research techniques. A national nonprofit, Data Carpentry, is engaged in this space across many areas of science and engineering, and their chapter on UW-Madison's campus plans to develop a course to teach these methods in the context of biomedical research. The goal is to educate young health sciences professionals in modern computational research techniques. To do this well requires a real-life dataset with complicating features: a large number of rows and columns, multiple tables that must be joined, messy data forms like text, and interesting missingness patterns that may carry meaning. We would like to develop a teaching dataset using a subset of ADNI data that could be used in this course. Students would use the data to learn about spreadsheet organization, data cleaning using OpenRefine, database queries using SQL, and statistics and data visualization using R, specifically the packages dplyr and ggplot2. We would welcome guidance from the ADNI Data Use Committee on how to develop a subset of deidentified data that would be suitable for sharing with students for this purpose. We do not envision scientific publications coming out of this project, but if we produce an educational paper or presentation, we are happy to credit ADNI for use of the data. |
