Question
Question Posted 05/14/25:
Hello,
I am interested in using ADNI clinical assessment data. Before I apply for the data, I have two questions.
(1) Is detailed documentation available for the clinical assessment? I would like descriptions of all items administered during the evaluation, as well as information on modifications to standardized instruments like MMSE or MoCA, if any.
(2) For subjects who undergo cognitive assessment, are summaries available on what portion also contribute other data (e.g., PET, MRI, genetics)?
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hi Ben,
In response to your original question:
(1) The best source of information is going to be the procedures manuals for the various phases, which can be found on the IDA. After logging in, navigate using the top bar to 'Search & Download -> Study Files'. On that interface, use the sidebar on the left to navigate to 'Study Info' -> 'Protocols and CRFs'. The study was conducted in various 'phases' across time, and specific protocols for the administration of assessments (including which tests are administered, and the formatting of the results), may vary between phases. Each assessment should have a dedicated sub-section in the procedures manuals, as well as an omnibus containing information on the assessment battery in general (order of administration, etc.) The Data Dictionary file will be helpful for navigating the tables containing the results of different assessments. This is located in that same study files interface, under 'Study Files' -> 'Study Info'; the file is labeled 'Data Dictionary [ADNI1,GO,2,3,4]'.
(2) This is something that you may need to calculate yourself, depending on the data in question. For image listings and other tables that are included in the ARC builder interface (Search and Download -> ARC builder in the IDA) can be used to generate those statistics. For other data types, this is something that you may need to calculate yourself. The primary participant identifiers used in the data are RID and PTID, and these can be used to compare the availability of data in different tables. Note that all participants should have at least some data available across all modalities, barring cases, such as participants who were assessed as ineligible for the study during their screening visit and did not progress any further in the study.
Feel free to reply here if you have any other questions, or if there's anything that I can clarify further! I'd also be happy to provide more details regarding documentation for clinical assessments, determining the availability of data in other modalities, etc. or on any other questions.

*Quick correction - the Data Dictionary can be found in the 'Study Info' -> 'Data & Database' section of the Study files interface.
