Question

Question Posted 12/25/19:
Dear ADNI experts, how is MoCA calculated, exactly?

Currently I am trying to categorize MoCA data into multiple sub-categories: "MOCA-Visuospatial", "MOCA-attention", "MOCA-delayed", "MOCA-orientation", ect.

To double-check my results, I've tried re-scoring the total, but my calculations were not the same as the total score that was listed in MOCA.csv or ADNIMERGE.csv.

This is how I calculated the total using Excel:
TRAILS + CUBE + CLOCKCON + CLOCKNO + CLOCKHAN + LION + RHINO + CAMEL + DIGFOR + DIGBACK + LETTERS* + SERIALS* + REPEAT1 + REPEAT2 + FFLUENCY* + ABSTRAN + ABSMEAS + DELW* + DATE + MONTH + YEAR + DAY + PLACE + CITY

For LETTERS,
=IF(LETTERS < 2,1,0)

For SERIALS, =IF(SUM(SERIAL1:SERIAL5)>=4,3,IF(OR(SUM(SERIAL1:SERIAL5)=2,SUM(SERIAL1:SERIAL5)=3),2,IF(SUM(SERIAL1:SERIAL5)=1,1,0)))

For FFLUENCY,
IF(FFLUENCY >=11,1,0)

For DELW,
=SUM(IF(DELW1 =1,1,0), IF(DEWL2=1,1,0), IF(DEWL3=1,1,0), IF(DEWL4=1,1,0),IF(DEWL5=1,1,0))

I seem to be off by one or two for most of the total scores; is there an item that I am missing?

Thank you,
Neo

Please refer to the DOCUMENTS --> Study Information section of the ADNI website. The procedure manuals contain information that is specific to how assessment scoring is done for ADNI.

I have read the procedure manuals before and I am aware that the manuals explain the data inputs and contain items that are not normally measured in standard MoCA (Immediate Memory Trials). My concern is that the manuals also state that "The MOCA total score is not calculated for ADNI." However, there is a MOCA column at the end of the .csv files for MOCA.csv or ADNIMERGE.csv. If ADNI is not calculating the total MOCA score, then what do these numbers reflect? Could I be directed to the exact page or document that concerns the calculation of these numbers?
