Proposed Analysis: Barriers within the brain include the blood brain barrier and a monolayer of ependymal cells that line the ventricle walls of the brain and provide a barrier at the ventricle surface. In the human brain there is aging-related expansion of the ventricles; however, little is known about the capacity of the ependymal monolayer to adapt to increased surface area requirements, while maintaining barrier integrity. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we aim to determine the spatiotemporal trends in lateral ventricle expansion, and to evaluate the corresponding changes in fluid accumulation along the ventricle wall using FLAIR-MRI. Trends will be evaluated in aging and in Alzheimer's disease.
