Proposed Analysis: The segmentation and extraction of gray matter, white matter, and hippocampal volumetry in brain MRIs to serve as combined, preventative atrophy markers in the multiclass classification of Alzheimer’s disease. Volumetric markers as well as the specific ratio of gray to white matter within varied stages of impairment has not been largely investigated as a marker of detection of cognitive decline; also, much of the existing work on early detection looks at binary classification (Alzheimer’s positive/negative), making multiclass classification of different levels of severity (normal, mild dementia, moderate dementia) relatively novel. Through proper preprocessing (registration, skull stripping, intensity control) and the subsequent segmentation of features, an algorithm (through supervised machine learning methodologies, namely random forest) in order to enable multi-class classification of different stages of cognitive decline as well as dictate the significance of structural biomarkers as a form of preventative diagnosis.
