Proposed Analysis: For my 4th year Psychology honours project, I will map intrinsic timescales, measured from fMRI bold signals, following the protocol firstly proposed by Watanabe et al. (Elife, 2019). Our aim is to investigate abnormalities in intrinsic neural timescales in patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), compared to age-matched healthy controls. After pre-processing and artefact removal, we will perform a whole-brain, voxel-level autocorrelation analysis of fMRI data to calculate intrinsic timescales during resting state. We will compare the AD and MCI patients with controls, in order to identify regions of interest (ROI) where the timescales are abnormal - either slower or faster than the controls. We will extend our ROI analysis by performing correlation analyses on the fMRI data and the neuropsychological data, to identify whether the observed atypical intrinsic neural timescales are associated with the severity of symptoms. Analyses will be performed using SPM12 and MATLAB. The results will be interpreted taking into account a hierarchy of timescales, which is a link between brain structure and function.
