Proposed Analysis: People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at high risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, it is difficult to predict whether someone with MCI will develop AD dementia, making it hard to select treatments for patients or subjects for a clinical trial of a new treatment. In my proposed project, I will develop and validate a mixed effect model to predict future AD dementia status in individual patients with AD-related MCI. The model will combine brain MRI biomarkers of AD, cognitive test results, and demographic data on ADNI's MCI subjects. The brain MRI biomarkers include metrics quantifying AD-related damage to the hippocampus and will be extracted from the ADNI MRI data using software tools built in McGill University's NeuroImaging and Surgical Technologies lab. The model's predictions will be validated on the ADNI MCI data using 10-fold cross-validation.
