Proposed Analysis: Purpose: Recently, melatonin has attracted attention as a cause of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology, and we have shown that the volume of the pineal gland is significantly smaller in patients with AD than in those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and healthy controls (Matsuoka, et al., 2018.). We have also demonstrated that the pineal gland volume is correlated to cognitive impairment. This result might indicate the usefulness of pineal volume to predict the cognitive decline. We aim to evaluate whether pineal volume predict the conversion of MCI to AD. Methods: Patients with MCI are included in this study. The MMSE score is used to assess cognitive impairment. The pineal gland volume (PGV) and pineal parenchymal volume (PPV) are measured using three-dimensional volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (T1-weighted Magnetization-Prepared Rapid Gradient-Echo sequence) at baseline. Two sample t-test is performed to compare the PGV and PPV at baseline between patients with MCI who converted to AD and those who did not convert to AD. Multiple regression analyses are also used to evaluate whether pineal volume predict the cognitive decline.
