Proposed Analysis: | Our group, led by Dr. Michael Deem at Rice, is interested in the resting-state functional connectivity of human brain and its relation to patients' cognitive behavioral performance and/or responses to therapies. Specifically, we propose to preprocess the resting-state fMRI images using AFNI, and analyze the time series data of blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal. The BOLD time series will be obtained for each voxel of the brain. Voxels will then be grouped into brain areas such as the Brodmann Areas, and the average BOLD time series for these area will be calculated. Next, we will calculate the Pearson correlation between the time series and thus obtain the functional connectivity network between brain areas. A measure of the modular organization of this functional connectivity network - modularity - will be calculated and correlated with patients' cognitive performance. We have previous experience on conducting similar analysis on healthy subjects, as well as avoidant personality disorder and borderline personality disorder patients. |
