Proposed Analysis: | The overall objectives of the research project are to use deep learning techniques to specify the characteristic pattern of brain changes that is distinctive of persons at a later stage of preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and then determine whether asymptomatic, middle-aged adults who exhibit such brain changes are more likely to experience future cognitive decline. Deep learning techniques will be utilized to classify T1-weighted MR scans from MCI, AD, and cognitively normal individuals. An aggregate abnormality score will be derived for each subject and its predictive utility will be compared to that of commonly used CSF biomarkers, such as beta amyloid and tau and PET. Our goal is also to evaluate how individual differences related to cognitive reserve and genetic risk modify the association between early brain changes and future decline. |
