Proposed Analysis: | With rapid advancements in the performance of machine learning algorithms, notably convolutional neural networks, there is an opportunity for an increased understanding of medical images. The objective of this proposal is to explore machine learning applications to the identification and prediction of the early onset of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. The central hypothesis of this proposed study is that current algorithms have the ability to recognize imaging patterns that are present in patients with early onset of AD and MCI. These patterns can be augmented to clinical data then used to train computer models to recognize this early onset. The rationale for this proposal is that this advanced imaging analysis will aid in the development of clinical tools for non-invasive diagnosis of early onset cognitive disease. The central hypothesis will be evaluated by using multiparametric MRI, FDG PET, and clinical data to train and validate various learning algorithms. In addition, features of interest will be isolated and examined for clinical relevance. The expected outcome of this work will contribute to the identification of MCI and AD as well as provide a better understanding of the relevant neuroimaging features of these diseases. |
