Proposed Analysis: Emerging studies have demonstrated an overlap of cognitive and behavioral symptoms in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s disease (AD) (Eissa et al, 2020). To examine this overlap, we plan to analyze diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scabs of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and MCI using the Shannon Entropy Technique. The results of this analysis will then be used to compare entropy values of patients with ASD, MCI, and AD (ASD scan data will be sourced from NIMH data archive, NDA) to compare the three disorders. Entropy analysis will provide a biomarker which may allow us to substantiate the hypothesis that these three disorders overlap. We will be downloading scans of approximately 70 subjects, and conducting entropy analysis of the whole brain scan to identify a proper entropy threshold value for patients with ASD, and compare this value with entropy values of MCI and AD patients.

UPDATED (2021-06-10) :ASD Scans will be obtained from a single project of the ABIDE II database [i.e., the Barrow Neurological Institute and the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center (SAARC)] along with associated controls. Currently, ADNI, 86 Control subjects, 25 AD subjects, and 46 MCI subjects are being used for final entropy analysis to be compared with ASD data.
