Proposed Analysis: We proposed to develop an automatic classification tool for PET brain images to differentiate between mild cognitive impairment, Alzheimer's disease and normal controls. We will use data of the three classes to train promising machine learning algorithms. Since a brain volume contains thousands of voxels which represent variables and the number of subjects is generally smaller, this task suffers from the so called ?curse of dimensionality?. In these cases, traditional classifiers like neural networks, Nearest Mean Classifier or Fisher linear discriminant are not appropriate. We will investigate state of the art techniques, more robust to the 'curse of dimensionality', like Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines (MARS) method or mixtures of locally linear methods (ensemble methods).
