Proposed Analysis: Established research recognizes that the presence of one or two APOE ε4 allele(s) increases the risk of developing dementia, specifically Alzheimer's disease (AD; Lyons et al., 2013). Additionally, individuals with at least one APOE ε4 allele demonstrate significantly worse objective sleep when compared to those who do not have the high-risk allele (Drogos et al., 2016). Notably, maintenance of normal sleep-wake patterns has been found to correlate with reduced ε4 allele effect on cognitive decline amongst patients with AD (Lim et al., 2013). Therefore, it is hypothesized that subjective sleep quality (as measured by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) will moderate the relationship between APOE ε4 genotype, age, and severity of dementia symptoms (quantified as CDR total). It is thought that the severity of dementia will be greater at a younger age in individuals with at least one APOE ε4 allele and poor subjective sleep quality.
