Proposed Analysis: Cushing’s hypothesis states that hypertension develops as a reflex response to cerebral hypoperfusion. The hypothesis proposes that if, for whatever reason, cerebral perfusion is impaired, there is an increase in autonomic output from the brain to the cardiovascular system. This drives an increase in systemic blood pressure in an effort to correct cerebral perfusion. To date, only a small number of cross-sectional studies have attempted to address this hypothesis. To investigate for a causal relationship between cerebral hypoperfusion and elevated blood pressure, longitudinal data is required. I would like to investigate the longitudinal relationship between cerebral perfusion, cerebral metabolism and blood pressure in healthy controls from your dataset. Specifically, I wish to explore whether there is any evidence of a reduction in cerebral perfusion and/or metabolism with time that precedes an upward trend in blood pressure.
