Proposed Analysis: | Intra-individual variability is a common component of aging-related cognitive decline and the behavioural changes associated with neurodegenerative and other brain-related disorders (MacDonald, Nyberg and Bächman, 2006). As intra-individual variability increases, representing systematic variations in neurocognitive performance as opposed to random error, its indicators can render differences between populations more apparent than mean-level differences alone. Monitoring intra-individual variability can therefore provide a warning of underlying pathology. However, little work has been done about intra-individual variability in depression. Thus, we plan to look at the intra-individual variability among the correlates in depressed versus non-depressed older adults. For the proposed analysis, we will divide the ADNI sample by depression cut-off score (high and low depression) using the available Geriatric Depression Scale data. Intra-individual variability will be defined as fluctuations in performance of a given neurocognitive correlate of frailty across the three-time intervals of the ADNI study (ADNI1, ADNI2 and ADNI3) using the available clinical assessment items within the neuropsychological testing subcategory (MoCA, MMSE, …). The hypothesis is that not all correlates will have a good level of variability to be used as a diagnostic tool. MRI imaging data pertaining to microbleeds available within the ADNI MRI MCH item from the Mayo (Jack Lab) will complement these analyses as to consider the cerebrovascular alterations within the brain that may also serve as diagnostic markers (Lee et al., 2018). |
