Proposed Analysis: Research has shown that tau can be found in the amygdala very early in the course of Alzheimer’s disease (AD)—as early as Braak stage 3. While the amgydala plays a significant role in emotion processing and expression, its role in the neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) that AD patients suffer from—such as depression and apathy – is poorly understood. Not much is known about whether the early stages of AD pathology are associated with focal tau deposition in the amygdala, and, if so, whether focal amygdalar tau corresponds with NPS. With these data, we seek to compare the amygdalar tau in three groups; healthy controls who are amyloid positive, healthy controls who are amyloid negative, and participants with mild cognitive impairment. We believe that characterizing amygdalar tau depositions in the early stages of AD would be a valuable contribution to the current body of AD research, with potential implications for earlier diagnosis and better characterization of cognitive and neuropsychiatric impairment.
