Proposed Analysis: We propose the following related commentary aimed at an epidemiologic audience: Biomarkers for dementia (including AD pathology) measured in blood are an exciting area of rapid development that may offer an avenue to incorporate biological measures into research on cognitive aging in broader samples. The promise of plasma biomarkers is that they may make it possible to better understand the timing of biological processes that drive dementia burden and dementia disparities. Despite clear advantages over more traditional biomarkers for dementia, plasma biomarkers also pose unique challenges, which we aim to explore. Specifically, we plan to outline some key considerations for the thoughtful use of plasma biomarkers in dementia epidemiology currently and as they continue to be developed. We connect our discussion of these biomarkers to underlying epidemiologic concepts to highlight the relevance of the ideas to other areas of epidemiologic inquiry using biomarkers. We will create examples using ADNI data to illustrate key concepts in the appropriate use of plasma biomarkers.
