Proposed Analysis: I am a second-year Ph.D. student, and my Ph.D. research hopes to look at the connection between early-life traumatic brain injuries (TBI), and the development of neurodegenerative diseases (ND), such as Alzheimer's disease. Within the first year of my degree, I created an intensive literature review that suggests numerous biological attributes are shared between these two events. For example, known biological repercussions following both the primary and secondary response from a TBI are oxidative stress and blood-brain barrier damage, and both of these repercussions have been suggested to contribute to the development of ND. With me being earlier in my degree my focus of the study is currently on mice to see if there is a direct correlation between TBI effects and ND symptoms. But having access to this database of human brain scans of a variety of Alzheimer's disease progression would be exceptional information to be able to compare our animal studies with human a collection of human scans. Especially since ADNI has progression photos of individuals who suffer from Alzheimer's disease, this could allow me to align the animal scans with the collected human scans to have a better and more direct comparison with the progression of biomarkers that correlate with ND.
