Proposed Analysis: In this study, we aim to develop a method using deep learning to automatically extract perivascular spaces (PVS) from brain MRI images. PVS refers to the interstitial fluid or cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the small penetrating arteries and veins in the brain. Enlarged PVS (ePVS) has been reported to be associated with cerebral small vessel disease and cognitive function, making it an increasingly important area of research. Previous studies have reported that manually extracting PVS and quantifying their volume is related to the pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric disorders. However, manual extraction is subject to issues of reproducibility and is time-consuming, which has hindered its clinical application thus far. Therefore, in this research, we aim to explore the development of a technique using deep learning to automatically extract PVS from brain MRI images. This would potentially overcome the limitations of manual extraction, providing a more efficient and reproducible method for studying the association between PVS and various psychiatric and neurological conditions.
